AWARDS

The May Cohen Award is awarded annually to the FMWC member that best personifies the legacy of May Cohen and her unique ability to transfer the FMWC vision into living action in support of women physicians and women's health. Deadline for nominations is December 31, 2010.

The Enid Johnson MacLeod Award recognizes either a physician or non-physician for the promotion of women’s health research and/or women’s health education. This award was established to honour Dr. Enid MacLeod, a long-time member of the Federation from Nova Scotia. Dr MacLeod was known for her research into the use of curare for anaesthesia and remembered for her generosity and warmth of spirit. Nominations are open until December 31, 2010.

The Reproductive Health Award is given annually in recognition of a FMWC full member seen to contribute the most to reproductive health. Nominations are now open for the 2011 Reproductive Health Award and require submission of a completed nomination form and c.v./resume of the nominee. Deadline for nominations is December 31, 2010.

Honorary Member is given annually to usually a non-member of the FMWC, to a woman who has rendered outstanding service to one or more of the following: the Federation of Medical Women (FMWC), to medicine and particularly to women’s health issues.

The Jessie McGeachy Award is presented every year to the woman graduating medical school at University of Saskatchewan with the best academic standing. The award was established in 1968 in honour of Dr. Jessie McGeachy, wife of the second Dean of Medicine, Dr. Wendell MacLeod.

SCHOLARSHIPS

The Margaret Owens-Waite Memorial Fund (MOWMF) is a $1,000 scholarship provided to a FMWC practicing physician member wishing to further her medical education, complete temporary work in a rural/developing country or present an original paper at a medical meeting, with priority given to Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA). Nominations are open until December 31, 2010. Apply now!

The Maude Abbott Research Fund (MARF) is designed to provide support to female physicians who wish to complete women's health research. It is hoped to give this scholarship out starting in 2010! Consider donating to this worthy charity today !

LOANS

The Maude Abbott Loan Fund was established in 1939. Repayable $1,000 loans are available to female medical students. The self-nominating applications are available online. Next deadline for applications is December 31, 2010.

	Creating Climate Change for the Medical Workplace CLICK http://www.cwhn.ca/en TO GO TO CWHN WEBINAR Presenters: Janet Dollin MDCM, CCFP, FCFP Kathleen Gartke, MD, FRCSC Barbara Lent MD, CCFP, FCFP Cheryl Levitt MBBCh, CCFP, FCFP The current reality of Canadian physician demographics will require men and women to collaborate to optimize clinical care through innovative ways of organizing clinical work and academic responsibilities. Presenters will look at international data in context with what we have learned in Canada to ensure healthy medical workplaces, to improve gender equity in the ranks and within leadership, and to build family-friendly workplaces within our institutions. The goal is for webinar participants to discover the relevance of these international reports to Canada and to their own workplace, reflect on evolving attitudinal shifts, gain deeper understanding across generations and consider possible individual and institutional responses to the issues raised. New HPV Prevention Vaccine for Males The Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) applauds Health Canada for approving GARDASIL for boys and men for the prevention of HPV infection, the most common sexually transmitted infection in Canada. Men play an important role in the transmission of HPV to their sexual partners who, as a result, can develop HPV-related ano-genital cancers and genital warts. Previously, girls and women age 9 to 26 have been approved to receive this vaccine. The FMWC believes that decreasing the risk of HPV infection in men through vaccination will provide additional public health benefit by decreasing the risk of infection to their sexual partners.
