Say No to Violence Against Women                                                                                        Join UNIFEM and take action

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is a day commemorated in Canada each December 6, the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique Massacre, in which 14 women were singled out for their gender and murdered. It is often marked by vigils, discussions and other reflections on violence against women.

Canadian flags on all federal buildings, including the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill, are flown at half-mast on December 6. In addition, Canadians are encouraged to observe a minute of silence on December 6 and to wear a white ribbon (or a purple ribbon) as a commitment to end violence against women.

FMWC members can start or join an action to educate through Unifem

WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health

Closing the gap in a generation: Health equity through action on the social determinants of health-2008 report
Social justice is a matter of life and death. It affects the way people live, their consequent chance of illness, and their risk of premature death. We watch in wonder as life expectancy and good health continue to increase in parts of the world and in alarm as they fail to improve in others.

Women Who Care

WOMEN WHO CARE is a collection of thirty-two women¹s stories about caring. Through prose and poetry, our book captures the personal and professional values and expectations of women caregivers at each stage in their lives and careers. It examines women¹s experiences as the providers and recipients of health care. Several contributors are FMWC members. To order your copy, please go to:

The Power Study

POWER is a multi-year project funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The latest information on women’s health and health care in Ontario will be analyzed. The women’s health report card will serve as an evidence-based tool for policy makers, providers, and consumers in their efforts to improve health and reduce inequities among Ontario women. It focuses on the leading causes of illness and death among women, such as cancer, heart disease, depression, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders, and reproductive health. In addition, it will report on the overall health of Ontario women, women’s access to health care services, and the social determinants of women’s health.

The project for an Ontario women’s health evidence based report card (POWER) is developing explicit methods for assessing equity as a routine part of performance measurement (www.powerstudy.ca). The principal investigator of the POWER study is Dr Arlene Bierman from St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto.
