In 2008, the Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) launched a Pap test campaign in support of Cervical Cancer Awareness Week.  Women, who did not have a family doctor or gynaecologist; were able to drop-in or book an appointment with participating doctors during this campaign to receive a Pap test.  Last year's campaign saw almost 500 women receive a Pap test, most of which had not been tested far too long. For women who did have a physician, the publicity around the campaign served as a reminder to book their Pap test.

In 2009, the FMWC partnered with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada ,  the Society of Canadian Colposcopists of Canada and GlaxoSmithKline to increase the scope, reach and impact of the campaign. In 2010, the Society of Gynecologic Oncology of Canada and the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada are also supporters. With this collaborative effort, we should be able to provide more Pap tests and deal with abnormal results in a more expeditious manner.

Every year, in Canada, 1,300 to 1,500 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and almost 400 women die of this disease.  Increased screening for cervical cancer has led to a tremendous reduction in the number of cases and deaths from the disease each year. Still, far too many women do not receive their regular Pap test and are dying needlessly from this largely preventable cancer.

Physicians and health-care professionals are invited to take a stand against cervical cancer.

We hope you will agree to join us in this campaign to improve access to Pap tests, urge women to obtain the Pap test, raise awareness of cervical cancer, and reduce the unnecessary deaths.

During Cervical Cancer Awareness Week, you are invited to open your doors to provide Pap tests for women who do not have a family doctor or gynaecologist. Participating physicians and health-care professionals will allow any woman to book an appointment or drop-in for a Pap test throughout the week or for a shorter period during that week. All participating clinics will be provided with a package of colour posters and supporting materials by mail.
